An exegetical study of the Gospel according to Matthew, its background, and message.

課程目的

Upon the successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Understand the meaning of each passage in the Gospel of Matthew, including the arguments used for the most common viewpoints of controversial passages.

2. Know the main theological themes of the book, with an emphasis on the major titles, nature and ministry of Jesus, God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Christian life.

3. Know historical settings, key events, and key persons in the Gospel of Matthew.

4. Know the major historical issues raised and the approaches taken to resolve these questions.

5. Understand the Matthean perspective of Jesus Christ, the Kingdom, and discipleship.

6. Understand the practical implications and applications of the teachings of the gospel for today's church and our own lives.

7. Develop a deeper love for and closer relationship with Jesus.

8. Live more consistently in obedience to Christ’s commandments, through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.

課程組成

The student will be exposed to the following basic subject areas:

• A biblical, theological, and practical understanding of calling and the challenges and opportunities of a career in ministry.

• A theology and personal understanding of human differences, spiritual gifts, and personal development.

• Doctrinal and organizational principles for leading and managing a local church ministry

• Promising practices for church leaders in relationships, communication, and change


The student will be expected to master the following skills and/or minimum content:

• Assessment of self in the following areas

o Spiritual gifts

o Personality type

o Personal and ministry strengths and growing edges

o Self-understanding of call, including purpose, values, and vision

o Plan for personal and professional growth during seminary

• Assessment of leadership/management skills for local church ministry

These will be demonstrated through:

• Processing self-assessment items in a group context.

The student will be expected to develop a conceptual framework for:

• The role various experiences and people play in personal and spiritual development

• A theology of human differences and how they contribute to the proper functioning of the Church and its Kingdom mission.

• A Baptist ecclesiology which sees the pastor/leaders as administer/equippers and the members as member-ministers.

• A missional view of the church as sent into the local context and as sending out into global contexts for evangelism and church planting.

The student will demonstrate affective growth in the following areas:

• Greater understanding and appreciation of oneself

• Appreciation for the value of others who differ from him/her, and a commitment to positive relationships within the Christian community.

• Acceptance of the potential positive outcomes of painful experiences in one’s life

• Demonstrate a commitment to fulfill God’s calling on one’s life within the missional community.

Over the course of the semester the following evaluation exercises will be used to determine the level of mastery of course content achieved by each class participant:

1. Class Attendance and Participation (10%)

Class attendance and participation are critical to the learning process. Students should attend and properly prepare for every class meeting.

2. Reading Assignments (10%)

Students will read the Gospel of Matthew throughout the semester along with selected readings from France and Fee, and any additional selected readings.

3. Weekly Quizzes (10%)

A quiz will be given at the beginning of each class. Quizzes will focus on the readings and material covered in the previous week.

4. Personal Reflection Paper (20%): Due Date 3/6/2025

Students will write a personal impact paper of 1-2 pages. Students will identify a personally “life-changing truth” from the Gospel of Matthew. The paper will include: describe that “truth” in context, develop that “truth” in the broader context of theology, and explain how the student plans to apply that “truth” in their life.

5. Exegetical Paper (40%):Due Date 4/10/2025

Students will write a detailed exegetical paper on a passage in Matthew. The paper will be 3-5 pages and should include the following elements:

a. Structural outline: Using a literal translation of the passage, create a structural outline/diagram of the passage, identifying the major and minor movements, with a brief explanation following (*not included in page count*).

b. Literary context and lexical analysis: Include textual issues and variants, conduct word studies on key words, assess the important literary components, and evaluate literary context (*If you know Hebrew/Greek you can use them; if not, look at five or more versions in English. Examples of important literary components: characters, places, transitions, literary devices, narrative movements, vocabulary, and the near to far context).

c. Historical context: Identify and explain historical, cultural, and geographical aspects in the passage and book context.

d. Interpretation and Theology: Provide an understanding of interpretation and theological insights for the passage and how it contributes to the book, the NT, and the whole Bible based on inductive study. Identify a main idea of the text. Describe the meaning/purpose of the passage in light of the book’s context, NT context, and Bible as a whole. Identify key themes and theological contributions.

e. Critical analysis: Summarize and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of scholarly views of the passage, along with how your own interpretation corresponds.

f. Contemporary relevance and application: Using your study, insights, and theology, identify the relevance and practical applications of the text for your local context. Build a bridge from then to now. Be specific.

學生從《馬太福音》中選取一段經文及撰寫一篇詳細的釋經文章。文章應為3-5頁及內容應包括以下幾個要素:

a. 結構大綱:使用該段經文的直譯版本,創建該段經文的結構大綱/圖表,識別主要和次要的結構變化,並附上簡短的解釋(不計入頁數)。

6. Presentation (10%)

Students will present in class their exegetical paper and respond to questions posed by the instructor and classmates.

張文龍牧師 Rev. William Cheung

張文龍是信實谷宣道會中文部牧師。曾是一位理性主義者。在1996年,一次偶然的機會,他「遇見」上帝,從此他放棄化學研究,走上服侍上帝的路。他在2019加入信實谷宣道會當中文部牧者。張文龍與妻子Vivian育有一子一女,Amos 和Dorcas。張文龍誠意邀請您與他一起尋求基督信仰,一個可理解的信仰。
William Cheung is the Chinese Pastor of Silicon Valley Alliance Church. William was always a rationalist. Until Year 1996, he “met” Jesus Christ; henceforth, he gave up his career in the chemistry research for serving God full time. William joined SVAC in 2019 as a pastor in the Chinese ministry. He and his wife, Vivian, have a son and a daughter, Amos and Dorcas. William invites you to join him in seeking Christian faith, a rational belief.
